Sub Metering by a Master Electrician in Petoskey Mi
I just completed the Sub Metering system that I wrote about in an earlier post. The job went fairly smoothly. The components arrived just in time to get the job done before the owners tenant moved in. To recap I installed this device so that the owner can monitor how much electricity his tenant is using from the apartment he rents out above his garage.
From the pictures you can see that the panel on the right was the original, it fed everything, so what I had to do was to separate out the circuitry that fed the apartment and wire it into the new panel I installed on the left. I also added a circuit for the stack washer/dryer the owner just installed. Once I had the apartment isolated to it’s own panel I was able to install the Meter so it would measure just the apartment panel.
Space was definitely at a premium. It was a bit of a challenge working around the existing plumbing pipes, framing and electrical. But I am pleased with the way it turned out and that I was able to cross the finish line before his tenant moved in.

Hi,
Thanks for this information. I’m interested in doing this to my bunk house to rent it out. How much does just the sub meter cost if I wanted to do it myself? Which one did you use? I live in Wyoming. Thanks!
The meter I used was made by Square “D” Noah. It was their smallest and most cost effective unit.
Prices to tend to change over time and the project did take place a while ago but you could probably get the meter for
between $600.00 to $700.00
Also just for safety’s sake it’s always a good idea to consult your local electrician about any new codes or other potential hazards.
Have a great day!
