Separate meter for an apartment in Bay View Petoskey
I just met a client on Rosedale St. in Bay View Petoskey. I have been in a great many homes in this area over the years. This one was exceptional, it had all the Victorian era details, I first noticed the Mansard style roof with its many dormers and the beautiful wraparound porch with period reproduction light fixtures as I walked up to the front door. I was greeted by my client and I stepped inside, the maple tongue and groove floors below and the wainscot paneling covering the nine foot tall walls and the ceilings where amazing, like stepping back in time.
A lot of people will remodel a period house and somehow in the process the home loses some of its character. It was so nice to see this old beauty preserved, just the way the original designers had intended, what a treat.
What the client had called me in for was in the detached garage / apartment. Right now the power for both of them are fed from one panel. He would like to meter the apartment separately so he can bill his tenant for their portion of the electric bill. He has two options.
- · Install a separate service for the apartment above so the tenant gets their own bill for electricity
- · Or I suggested a sub-metering system in which he monitors the tenant’s electrical usage through a special meter I install.
He liked the idea of the sub meter because he wouldn’t have to see more wires hanging in the air around his house. Just the same I’ll run numbers for both of the system’s and let him make the final decision. I always like to give my customers at least two options that they can choose from.
